Invitation Homes Under Investigation For Possible Eviction Moratorium Violations
Home leasing company indicates it is a target in a congressional investigation.
July 29, 2021
Despite a federal eviction ban, Invitation Homes (INVH), one of the largest single-family home lessors in the U.S., is under investigation for potentially kicking people out of their homes during the pandemic. In its latest 10-Q, Invitation Homes revealed the matter:
“In July 2021, we received congressional inquiries requesting information and documentation about our eviction practices during the COVID-19 pandemic, including information relating to compliance with federal eviction moratorium requirements and cooperation with impacted residents to use federal assistance funds as an alternative to eviction.”
Reports indicate Invitation Homes is one of four entities under investigation for allegedly evicting more than 5,000 people during the moratorium. Invitation Homes says lower rent collection rates during the pandemic caused bad loans to nearly double to 2%. In the current quarter, Invitation says it has resumed collecting late fees.
