STAAR Surgical Tells Customers to Stop Using Its Products
Device maker provides little detail about potentially troubled eye lenses.
May 8, 2023
With shares up more than 31% year-to-date (YTD) STAAR Surgical Company (STAA), a maker of implantable lenses for the eye, has warned customers to stop using one of its products overseas. While stopping short of issuing a recall, STAAR published a Field Safety Notice ordering customers in Japan, France, Germany, Poland, and Italy to stop using certain lenses used in cataract surgeries.
In its latest quarterly filing, STAAR suggested the matter was little more than a precautionary matter after another company issued a Notice regarding a similarly manufactured product. Later in the filing, STARR indicated the order not to use the lenses would remain:
“...until we determine the specific root cause…”
The company did not disclose what issue has arisen that would require root cause analysis.
As of March 31, 2023, STARR has $1.2 million in inventory of the affected lenses, or approximately 4.3% of total inventory.
