Allegro MicroSystems Inflates Profit With Accounting Change

Semiconductor firm would’ve lost millions more in the quarter without new useful life estimates.

August 16, 2024

After expanding overseas and via acquisition Allegro MicroSystems (ALGM), a maker of sensor integrated circuits (ICs) for motion control and energy-efficient systems, says its equipment is lasting longer than previously expected.

Attributing the increases, in part, to what it calls “continuous maintenance”, Allegro now says a significant portion of its machinery and equipment will last 42.8% longer than it had previously thought.

The change slashed Allegro’s operating loss in the quarter 29.3% to $10.6 million.

In increasing its useful life estimate from seven to ten years, Allegro reduced its depreciation expense more than $4.4 million and increased net income more than $8 million in the latest quarter.
