WideOpenWest’s Revenue Recognition Is Suspect

Internet provider admits the majority of reported sales may not be accurate.

September 4, 2024

WideOpenWest Inc. (WOW), a provider of high speed data, cable television, and digital telephony services to businesses and consumers, has acknowledged it may not be accurately recognizing nearly all of its revenue.

In its latest quarterly filing, WideOpenWest revealed control deficiencies impacting systems that support the revenue recognition process for subscription services.

Subscription revenue accounted for 92% and 93% of WideOpenWest’s total revenue for the six months ended June 30, 2024 and 2023.

The disclosure also included the following admission:

“...management did not design and maintain effective review controls over the completeness and accuracy of information produced by those systems.”

Though WideOpenWest says the control deficiency existed as of December 31, 2023, the company says it was not discovered until August 6, 2024— five months after the company’s 2023 annual report was filed.

The company says it’s in the process of fixing the problem.
